Professional Signage Design Services in New York
Signage design built for New York storefronts, landmark districts, and buildings where every inch of frontage is regulated and every install is a logistics problem.
The New York Market
Sign Design That Understands New York
New York is the most sign-dense market in the country and the least forgiving. A single retail frontage in SoHo may sit under a landmarked cornice, share a facade band with three other tenants, and still need to read from across a two-way avenue. We design for that reality: tight sign bands, shallow projections, restrained illumination, and letter proportions that hold up when the viewing distance is fifteen feet rather than a hundred and fifty.
Because most Manhattan and Brooklyn work happens on occupied buildings, our drawings carry more than artwork. We document existing conditions from your survey photos, note where the raceway or backer can hide fasteners, and call out where power has to be pulled from so an electrician is not improvising on a lift over a sidewalk shed.
Outer-borough and suburban work behaves differently. Queens and Staten Island retail corridors, Long Island strip centers, and New Jersey highway frontages need larger cabinets, pylon and monument structures, and parking-lot wayfinding. We size those to real approach speeds instead of scaling up a storefront layout.
New York City permitting runs through the Department of Buildings, and signs in special purpose or historic districts pick up additional review. We prepare permit-ready drawing sets with elevations, dimensions, square footage calculations, illumination notes, and mounting details formatted the way NYC expediters and DOB filings expect, so your permit consultant is not redrawing our work.
We work remotely as the design and engineering-drawing partner behind sign companies across the metro. Your shop fabricates and installs; we produce the renderings that win the client, the shop drawings your fabricators build from, and the permit drawings your filer submits.

Design detailsHow We Work
We Work Remotely With Sign Companies in New York and Worldwide
Nova Sign Works LLC is a remote signage design and production artwork studio based in Casselberry, Florida — we do not own or operate manufacturing facilities, and we have no shop or crew in New York. We work remotely with sign companies, fabricators, print shops, general contractors, architects, and property managers in New York and worldwide. When you already fabricate, you keep the client relationship, the build, and the installation while we supply the renderings that close the sale and the shop and permit drawings that make production predictable. When physical signage is required, we can also support manufacturing and delivery through our trusted manufacturing partner network, subject to project requirements, partner availability, and destination. Files move over email and shared drives, feedback happens on marked-up PDFs, and there is never a travel charge on the invoice — which is exactly why remote design costs less than staffing an in-house drafting desk you only need part of the month.
Before We Draw
What a Good New York Site Survey Gives Us
Most revision cycles trace back to missing information rather than disagreement about design. A sign band measured from a photograph instead of a tape, an unrecorded electrical location, or a landlord criteria sheet that surfaces after the client already approved a concept — each of those costs a week. The survey below takes twenty minutes on site and removes almost all of it.
- Wide photos of the facade or site from every direction traffic approaches in New York
- Measured sign band height, width, and any obstructions such as downspouts or joints
- Wall construction type and thickness where the sign will anchor
- Existing electrical location, or the nearest point power can be pulled from
- Landlord sign criteria, HOA rules, or any known ordinance limits
- Vector brand files, exact brand colors, and any existing sign standards
With that in hand we can specify the sign properly the first time: substrate and face material, illumination type and LED spacing, return depth, finish system, fastener material, and drainage. Those decisions are where a sign either lasts a decade in New York conditions or starts failing in the second season, and they belong on the drawing rather than in a phone call to the shop floor. Every specification we call out is written to be verifiable at fabrication and at installation, which also means your crew is never guessing at intent when the drawing reaches the jobsite.
We also flag the constraints we cannot resolve from a desk. If a proposed location looks like it may exceed the allowable sign area, sit too close to a property line, or require structural review, we say so in writing before design time is spent rather than after a plan reviewer says it for us.

FAQ
Signage Design in New York: Common Questions
Can you produce drawings that meet New York City DOB filing requirements?
Yes. We prepare sealed-ready sign drawing sets with elevations, sign area calculations, illumination and electrical notes, and mounting details in the format DOB filings and NYC expediters expect. Your licensed professional stamps and files.
Do you handle landmarked or historic district storefronts in New York?
We design to the tighter constraints those districts impose — reduced projection, no internally illuminated boxes where prohibited, reversible mounting into mortar joints rather than masonry faces, and material and finish callouts a Landmarks submission can be built around.
How do you design signage for narrow Manhattan frontages?
We prioritize legibility at short viewing distances: heavier stroke weights, tighter letter spacing, and blade or projecting signs that catch pedestrians walking parallel to the facade rather than approaching head-on.
Do you work with New York sign companies remotely?
Every project is handled remotely. You send site photos, dimensions, and brand files; we return renderings, shop drawings, and permit drawings on an agreed schedule with no travel cost added.
